Calvary wins golf state championship

Calvary's boys golf team won the state 2-A golf championship Tuesday defeating runner up Dunham by 19 strokes in the two-day tournament in Alexandria.

The Cavaliers finished with a total of 605 to take their first state championship in golf. They finished the state tournament tied for first last year, but lost in a sudden-death playoff.

"The boys worked so hard all year and had the state championship as their main goal. All that time on the driving range and all the extra time on the golf course really paid off for the boys," Coach Rusty Ward said.

Hunter Gauntlett finished fourth overall in the state individual competition with a 73 the first day and a 72 in day two.

Freshman Blake Traweek shot a 78 and a 76, Chase Leone fired a 77 and 80 and Daniel Hawkins turned in a 72 and 80 for Calvary.

Ryan Mastney ended with two-day totals of 75 and 89.

Coach Ward expressed his gratitude to Sam Rogers and Bob Gauntlett for all their support leading up to the state title.
